My Movies

Lootere (1993)

-I made my directorial debut with Lootere and it is perhaps one of my most successful overlooked films due to it been quite ahead of its time.
And the Story Goes as: Changez Lala (Anupam Kher) is a rich criminal of the city and in cold blood murders a police officer in front of Anjali (Juhi Chawla), a girl who works as a dancer in his club. The police force is desperate to jail Changez Lala and hence require Anjali to testify. Karan (Sunny Deol) & Chunky Pandey are sent to rescue the damsel in distress Anjali from the villan Changez Lala but out of fear for her life Anjali refuses to testify and give any statement. Eventually, after giving her statement it is realised that Anjali is no longer safe as Changez Lala wants her dead, so Karan is given the responsibility of Anjali's safety, and Karan takes her into the foothills into hiding until the day she is due in court. Meanwhile, Changez Lala is searching frantically to kill Anjali.

Cut to the hiding place...the love/hate relationship between Karan and Anjali at the start blossoms into love/love relationship and the two decide to get married. On arrival at the mandir however, Karan and Anjali are attacked by Changez Lala's men and in the process, Anjali is thrown off the mountains while Karan is beaten black and blue...

What happens next is for you to Anjali dead? Will Karan get revenge on Changez Lala? And who is the mysterious girl who looks just like Anjali (Juhi Chawla again) but refuses to recognise Karan? And who is Sikander ( Naseeruddin Shah).

The songs in the film went on to become very popular. My favourite is ''Ae Sawan Baras Zara'' which is shot beautifully and the 1st ever song written by Me. I was fortunate to have the great lata mangeshkar sing to my lyrics. The title track ''O Lootere O Lootere'' again is wonderful and there is a beautiful wedding song in the form of ''Mujhe Le Chal Mandir''

Sunny Deol and Juhi Chawla share a beautiful chemistry.. Sunny Deol plays the macho police officer to perfection and is a perfect match for Juhi's vulnerable persona in the film. The two look brilliant together and both having strong Punjabi roots, make it all the more enjoyable to watch.

Raja Hindustani (1996)

Lootere all by god's grace went on to be a nationwide Success especially in the hinterland. My next venture was a very simple and humble story Raja Hindustani yet it was the biggest hit of that year and as well as one of the biggest blockbusters of the 90's and also is the 4th biggest hit of 100 years of Indian cinema as of 2012. I guess the movie did manage to strike a connection with the audience and I am grateful to all my audience for that.

And the Story Goes as: Aarti (Karisma Kapoor) is a Richie Rich daughter of Mr. Sehgal (Suresh Oberoi). Raja (Aamir Khan) is a poor countryman. The Rani meets her Sapno ka Raja at a hill station and both fall in love with each other. Aarti, lives in a Palatial home with her father, Shalini (Archana Puran Singh) step-mother, who is very cruel, and a step-cousin. Aarti, getting bored at home decides to go on a small vacation to a small hill station named Palankhet in the country area, where her parents had met for the first time. On her journey to that area she meets Raja who is the chauffeur of the taxi that she hires. After a brief interval between the two fall in love with each other. Aarti's father on learning of their relationship get's very furious. But Aarti is very stubborn and get's married to her emotional Sapno ka Raja without her father Mr. Sehgal's blessings. However, Mr. Sehgal forgives his daughter, and invites both newlyweds to his palatial home, unknown to the two that it is a conspiracy by her father, step-mother and step-cousin to create a rift in their relationship by exploiting the boy's jealous & short tempered nature and also to commandeer the family's wealth.

The greatest strength of the film is it's deceptive simplicity which is definitely not ordinariness.

Dhadkan (2000)

- After Mela came Dhadkan perhaps my most loved and musical success as yet. It has gone on to receive cult status in the romantic genre.

And the stoty goes as: DHADKAN tells the story of Dev (Sunil Shetty) and Anjali (Shilpa Shetty), who are in love with each other. Anjali's parents (Kiran Kumar and Anjana Mumtaz) are against this match as Dev is not only poor but also a child out of wedlock, while Anjali belongs to the upper crust. Dev's dependence on Anjali is tremendous, as he has none but her to call his own.

When Anjali leaves Dev to marry Ram (Akshay Kumar), Dev is heart broken. His worries multiply when his mother (Sharmila Tagore) also dies, shocked to hear about her son's split with Anjali. However, Dev continues to hope for Anjali's return.

Dev feels that he lost Anjali to Ram because he had nothing to offer her in this materialistic world, so he decides to become rich and get her back. In the meantime, Ram and Anjali are anything but a perfect family. After all, Anjali's heart yearns for Dev, but she slowly starts loving and respecting her husband, Ram, whose love for Anjali knows no bounds.

Enters Sheetal (Mahima Chaudhary), a sophisticated girl from London, who falls in love with Dev, knowing fully well that Dev is in love with a married woman. Does Sheetal get Dev? Does Anjali come back to Dev? And what about Ram?

DHADKAN has perhaps the last song rendered by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the ever popular sehra ' Dulhe ka Sehra'.

BEWAFAA (2005)

- In 2005 came Bewafaa , glamorous , internationally amongst my biggest success stories esp. UK , musically strong and a satellite favourite.

And the Story Goes as: Anjali (Kareena Kapoor) is the younger daughter of her Canadian mother (Nafisa Ali) and Indian father (Kabir Bedi), living in the city of Montreal, Quebec. She shares a healthy relationship with her parents but has a secret to hide. She reveals this secret only to her elder sister Aarti (Sushmita Sen).

The secret is her love for a budding musician Raja (Akshay Kumar). Raja is not a rich man, but that does not deter Anjali from loving him. Aarti assures Anjali and Raja that she will convince her parents of their true love.

But unfortunately fate has different plans for them. Aarti passes away on the birth of her twin babies. Circumstances force Anjali to marry Aarti's husband, Aditya Sahai (Anil Kapoor). With the much older and mature Aditya, Anjali migrates to New Delhi.

Aditya is a business tycoon who hardly finds any time for his sister-in-law turned wife or his two lovable daughters. Anjali fulfills every role asked for her by society but cannot bridge the gap between herself and Aditya. She finds herself in a marriage that has no compatibility but only compromise. Her only source of solace are her two endearing girls.

Amidst all this, one day Raja, who is now a famous fusion singer, walks back into her life. Suddenly Anjali is torn. She begins hanging out with Raja. When Aditya returns, he senses a change in her and decides to look into it. He seeks the help of his friends, a flamboyant couple — Dil and Pallavi Arora (Manoj Bajpai and Shamita Shetty). After revealing to Anjali that he did know about Raja and acknowledging that Anjali is not at fault, Aditya gives her the freedom to choose between Raja and himself. She chooses Aditya over Raja, not only because of her duty as a mother, but also because she realises that she loves Aditya. Raja leaves and Anjali embarks on a tour with her husband, to rebuild her marriage.

- I Attempted a completely different genre this time – pure comedy and added to my repertoire , irrespective of boxoffice results necessarily.

And the Story goes as: Anu (Priyanka Chopra), a London based NRI who is living in India has just broken up with her boyfriend Danny (Dino Morea). Now, she's to come back to London to be a part of her stepsister Shirani's (Amisha Patel) marriage, to the New York-based, Gujarati businessman Kunal Shah (Suniel Shetty), who is also Danny's best friend.

In a plan to get back to Danny and to make him jealous, Anu convinces her colleague Aman (Akshaye Khanna), to accompany her to the wedding as her new beau. Incidentally, Shirani was also involved with Danny earlier, which resulted in heartbreak for her too, as everyone learns of Danny's womanizing ways. Anupam Kher and Lilette Dubey play guardians of the two sisters, Anu and Shirani.

As time passes by, Aman finds Anu fascinating and later it develops into a fondness between the two. How Anu and Aman's relationship undergoes a change during the course of these incidents forms the crux of the story.

It turns out that Danny had used Kunal to get to Shirani and he believes that they can still be together. Shirani keeps trying to tell Danny that she loves Kunal. Anu reacts with Aman in an unfriendly way but later they form a friendship that in time turns into love. When Anu finds out about Danny's relationship with Shirani, she breaks down knowing that everyone knew (even Aman) but didn't tell her. She tells Aman to go away but Kunal (who thinks of Aman as a friend) convinces him to stay for his sake (Aap ki khatir). The truth is revealed to everyone and the they believe that Anu loves Aman. Anu's parents convince her to go after Aman but she is too late as he as already left. When Shirani tells Kunal about Danny, he is heartbroken and chases Danny away. While chasing Danny, he finds Aman going away and he convinces Aman to ask Anu again for her love. He agrees and makes Kunal realize that he and Shirani are also meant to be together and to marry Shirani. Anu ends up marrying Aman and Kunal accepts Shirani happily after knowing the truth.
